“Church of our Saviour, Beijing” is engaging with the cultural memory of Beijing’s Catholic community by commemorating my family’s history and my childhood memories of church-going. This project is a collaged video composed of family pictures, archival footage, and stop motion animation composed from printed images of the church and the aforementioned family photos. It also remembers the history as my great great grandfather helped build the church and recruited many individuals in the neighborhood into the church community itself. Therefore, us as his descendants still treat this landmark as a central location to our bloodline.
My piece represents the act of remembering by retrieving the visuals of a of memory when one is zoned out or immersed in a dream. This is seen in the strangely familiar music, blended transitions, filters, and overlays sprinkled throughout the video project.
It follows a narrative structure of walking from the front gate to in front of the church, and eventually ending up inside the church, corresponding with space, geography, and me walking to church from my great grandma’s house as a child.
